Creating an Eco-Friendly Home
December 4, 2024 | Posted by: Sherry Corbitt
There are various things that can make your house non-eco-friendly. Some of these things you may even not be aware of. Such aspects can affect the environment and cost more to pay for. Understanding what these factors are and knowing how to adjust can make a significant change.
Natural Cleaning Products
Creating or purchasing natural cleaning products can make a huge difference. There are several ways to create your DIY cleaning products. A popular option is to use half water and half vinegar with essential oil. If you prefer to purchase your cleaning products, though, there are some great options available. In recent years, many companies have started creating natural products without harsh chemicals. When searching for such products, consider finding some that come in reusable/nonplastic containers. Not only will creating or purchasing natural products help keep your house eco-friendly, but it also could save you a bit of money in the long run.
Lighting
Many people may not know that the lighting in their house can waste a lot of their electricity. Many bulbs are designed to use a certain amount of energy, which most of the time is very high amounts. Led lights are great alternative lighting options, though, as they reduce the amount of energy that is used. This can certainly help make your house more eco-friendly and save you a lot on your electrical bill.
Unplugging Sockets
This is something that is not brought up enough. When an item is plugged into an electrical socket, it is still using electricity even if it is not in use. So not only does this waste electricity, but it also raises your electrical bill drastically. Of course, it may be a bit much to unplug every single plug in your home. Yet consider what items you do not use all the time or do not need to be plugged in. Some things may include your blender, kettle, chargers, and new gaming consoles.
Washing your Clothes
When washing your clothes, there are a few things that can help in being more eco-friendly. Washing using cold water uses a lot less energy than using warm/hot water. As well, consider washing some clothing items less frequently, since this can also reduce energy use in your house. Making these changes can certainly help the environment significantly.
Reducing Plastic Consumption
Today plastic can be seen everywhere, whether it's for our food or essentials. Yet, we can reduce how much plastic we use in our everyday lives by adjusting some aspects. Avoiding plastic water bottles and using a reusable bottle is a great way to start. Evaluate what groceries you purchase and see if other companies sell similar products with less to no plastic. When shopping for groceries or other items, bringing your own reusable can reduce a significant amount of plastic bags that would be used.
