Tips to Lower Household Expenses

December 4, 2024 | Posted by: Sherry Corbitt

Oh, the dreaded payments of household expenses. These bills are necessary for everyday functioning within your home, yet always seem to add up so fast. There is no way to completely eliminate these expenses, however, with these tips you may be able to significantly reduce the overall cost.

Tip 1: Conserve Energy

Did you know that anything plugged into an outlet, even when turned off is using energy? Small habits such as unplugging your charger, or other appliances when not in use are a great place to start. Other habits may include turning off lights when not in use and using natural light when possible. When is the last time you changed your light bulbs? You may consider investing in LED light bulbs as they are more energy efficient and brighter than traditional light bulbs. Another tip is to reduce the heat/AC when no one is home for the day!

Tip 2: Conserve Water

Do you have a leaky faucet that you have been meaning to repair? Little changes such as managing water wastage will help make a significant difference. Another consideration is when is the last time you upgraded your toilets? Upgrading to a two-flush system toilet is estimated to use roughly 20% less water per year! Another approach to manage your water usage is taking shorter showers, brushing your teeth with the tap off, and running the dishwasher or washing machine only at full capacity!

Tip 3: Food Wastage

When feeding a household it can be difficult to plan every meal. Some families find it helpful to plan 2-3 main meals and then stock up on everyday essentials. This will look different for every family but may include purchasing a few fruits, veggies, protein options, grain options, and additional snacks. This allows the greatest variety of meals to be made while ensuring the least amount of food will be wasted. Another tip to reduce food costs is to buy non-perishable foods in bulk as this option is cheaper! Coupons can also be used to identify different sales at each grocery provider.

Overall, there are many approaches that can be used to lower household expenses. Start by trying a few of these tips, which implementing small but sustainable habits will help make the most significant difference! I am your Mortgage Broker for life – so reach out and let’s discuss.
